Yiddish-American Operetta Di Goldene Kale with Dr. Michael Ochs
October 23, 2018 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm
Join us at Britton Hall at the University of Michigan (North Campus) for Yiddish-American Operetta: Di Goldene Kale
(Free and open to the public)
Join us at the University of Michigan’s Britton Hall for this very special lecture-performance with special guest musicologist, Dr. Michael Ochs, along with students and faculty from the University of Michigan performing highlights from Di Goldene Kale (The Golden Bride, 1923).
Di Goldene Kale premiered in February of 1923 during the heyday of Yiddish theater at the 2,000-seat Second Avenue Theater in New York and was performed all over America and internationally. Di Goldene Kale is a rich sampling of the period, written and produced between the passing of two laws which reduced immigration from Eastern Europe to a trickle, one in 1921 and one in 1924. The composer, Joseph Rumshinsky, is renown as one of the “big four” composers of American Yiddish operetta.
